Introduction
Department of Pharmacology, NEIGRIHMS started in the month of February 2009. The department is housed at 2nd Floor of the Faculty Block (near Director`s Block).
The objective of the department is to impart undergraduate and postgraduate level training. In addition to that it also aimed at providing practical job oriented skills to Residents and other medical & paramedical staff.
It also aimed at acting as nodal centre of Govt. of India in the field of drugs and drug related studies, research and training Programmes for the state of Meghalaya and other Northeastern states.
Infrastructure
- 2 (two) nos. of student’s laboratories, one laboratory is for Clinical Pharmacy purpose and the other one is Experimental Laboratory.
- A Museum required as per MCI guidelines is being set up. Presently it contains about 100 nos. of specimens including charts, models, photographs/portraits etc.
- The department has modern pharmacology equipments and instruments required for UG and PG teaching.
- Department has a library facility having textbooks and reference books mainly related to the subject of Pharmacology.
- Department has a demonstration room having capacity to fit 30 – 40 students equipped with modern teaching audiovisual aids and computers.
- The Institute has a central animal house facility run by the Department.
Academic Activities and Training
- The department is presently imparting training to the 2nd year MBBS students both theory and practical
- The department is also imparting training to the 2nd year B.Sc. Nursing students of the college of Nursing. It takes 2 (two) nos. of theory classes per week by faculty and/or resident doctors of the department.
- The department uses software and audiovisual aids for simulation of different animal and related experiments for teaching purposes
Other Services
- The department is not only restricting itself to teaching activities only, but also engaged in patient care related activities:
- It is engaged with the strategic activities related to provide “essential medicines” to the patients of NEIGRIHMS.
- Department is entrusted and engaged in monitoring of use of generic branded alternatives for branded medicines in NEIGRIHMS to comply with the Government of India directives in this regard.
- The department is involved with providing logistic and other supports to the Institute Pharmacy (Jan Aushadhi Stores of NEIGRIHMS) time to time.
- The department is also engaged in “Pharmcovigilance” activities and it is encouraging spontaneous Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) reporting system in NEIGRIHMS.
