NEIGRIHMS is designed to be:

• An autonomous Postgraduate Medical Institute – First in the North East and the Third in the country established by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
  

• Super-specialty Referral Hospital with 500 beds and user-friendly-patient-care system and state-of-the-art-technology.
  

• Center of Excellence for Medical Education and Human Health Resource Development  
  

• Central Health Research Organization. 
  

• Health Consultancy Service in regional and Central Health Schemes
  

• The Interim Hospital Facility (Phase-I) has been functioning since 20^th August 1998 . NEIGRIHMS to be completed at a cost estimate of Rs.422.60 crores within the year 2000-2005.  
  

• Construction of the permanent Institute and Hospital buildings in first IV packages worth Rs.180 crores has been progressing at Mawdiangdiang, 7 Kilometers from the City cent.
  

• The Institute expresses deep gratitude to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee for declaring NEIGRIHMS as a National Institute on 22^nd January 2000 when he visited Shillong. NEIGRIHMS. It was included in the Prime Minister’s Package for the North East in 1997.  
  

• Commemorative Stone of permanent Institute Buildings (Phase-II) at 306 acres of pine filled hilly land was laid down by the then Hon’ble Union Minister Health Minister Padmashree Dr.C.P.Thakur on 8^th August 2000 .
